Assessment of blocking performance in unidirectional and bi-directional wavelength routed ring networks

چکیده
In this paper, we present a comparison of the blocking performance in unidirectional and bi-directional wavelength routed ring networks. This performance comparison reveals that, for the same load per node and equal number of wavelengths per link, the performance of a unidirectional ring with N nodes is very close to the performance of a bi-directional ring with 4N nodes. This comparison also suggests that, for the same number of nodes and equal number of wavelengths per link, the performance of a unidirectional ring network with a load per node of ρ is similar to the performance of a bi-directional ring network with a load per node of 4ρ. An explanation is presented for this four-fold capacity increase of bi-directional rings over unidirectional rings, regarding number of nodes or loads per node.

Influence of Wavelength Interchange on the Blocking Performance of Wavelength Routed Chordal Ring Networks
In this paper, we investigate the influence of wavelength interchange on the blocking performance of wavelength routed optical networks with chordal ring topology. We have considered chordal rings with chord lengths of 3, N/4, and N +3, being N the number of nodes. It is shown that chordal ring networks with a chord length of N +3 and mesh-torus networks have a similar behaviour regarding wavel...
متن کاملQuantifying the Benefit of Configurability in Circuit-Switched WDM Ring Networks
We attempt to characterize the gain in traffic capacity that a reconfigurable network offers over a fixed topology network. We define the gain as the ratio of the maximum offered loads that the two systems can support for a given blocking probability. We develop a system model to analytically predict the blocking probability for both the fixed and reconfigurable systems. This model is different...
متن کاملInfluence of Chord Length on the Blocking Performance of Wavelength Routed Chordal Ring Networks Title
In this paper, we present an assessment of the blocking performance of wavelength routed optical networks with chordal ring topology. The performance is focused on chord lengths of 3, N/4, and N +3, being N the number of nodes. It is shown that, in a 100-node chordal ring network, the use of the chord length of N/4 instead of 3 clearly reduces the blocking probability. A reduction of the blocki...
متن کاملEfficient path protection in bi-directional WDM systems
Bi-directional WDM transmission is a technique that allows data to be transmitted simultaneously in both directions of a fiber, with different sets of wavelength channels for each direction. Compared with unidirectional WDM systems, it not only saves the cost of deploying extra fibers, but also allows more flexible bandwidth provisioning. To exploit this flexibility, we investigate path protect...
